This is a three-piece white metal ladder badge identified to Private Adam Smith of Company B, 153rd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry.

The top bar has a pin back and decorative scroll ends, and it’s stamped “ADAM SMITH.” A small middle bar reads “OSBORNE, KAN.,” the Kansas town where Smith lived after the war. Below it hangs a shield-shaped drop stamped “Co. B / 153rd / PA. VOL. INF.” It also carries a crescent, the badge of the Eleventh Corps, the corps the 153rd served in during its whole time in the field.

Smith lived in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. He enlisted as a private on October 7, 1862, and mustered into Company B the same day. The 153rd was a nine-month regiment raised mostly in Northampton County. It was assigned to the First Brigade, First Division of the Eleventh Corps. At Chancellorsville on May 2, 1863, it was on the exposed right flank that took Stonewall Jackson’s attack. Two months later at Gettysburg, it fought on Barlow’s Knoll on July 1. On the evening of July 2, it helped hold East Cemetery Hill against the Louisiana Tigers. Smith mustered out with the regiment at Harrisburg on July 24, 1863, three weeks after the battle.

Like many Union veterans, Smith moved west after the war and settled in Osborne, Kansas. Kansas had one of the largest Grand Army of the Republic memberships in the country. Badges like this one let veterans show their old regiment at reunions and encampments, often far from where they had enlisted. Having both his Pennsylvania regiment and his Kansas hometown on one badge makes this a nice record of a soldier’s life after the war.

The badge measures about 3" long. All three pieces are still joined by their original jump rings, and the pin is intact. The front has an even, untouched patina, and the stamping is crisp and easy to read. The reverse shows age toning and light oxidation spots. A Historical Data Systems soldier record is included.   [gh][ph:L]
