Vignette bust view of Thomas J. Harbaugh in a dark single-breasted frockcoat with high collared white shirt and dark bowtie.

Image has good clarity and contrast. Paper and mount are good but the left edge of the mount had something stuck to it at one time and when removed it took a bit of the gold mount border with it. The image itself is not touched.

Reverse has no photographer’s imprint but is signed in strong period ink “YOURS TRULY T. J. HARBAUGH.”

Thomas Jefferson Harbaugh was born in Ohio on October 16, 1839. He enlisted as a sergeant in Company E, 21st Ohio Infantry on April 20, 1861 and was mustered out after 3-months service on August 12, 1861. During his time with the 21st he saw service with General McClellan in western Virginia.

Harbaugh enlisted for the second time as 1st sergeant in Company G, 81st Ohio Infantry on August 18, 1862. In June of 1864 he was made Quartermaster Sergeant and received a commission to 2nd lieutenant on August 9, 1864 and to 1st lieutenant February 14, 1865. His date of muster out is not known.

The 81st Ohio was organized in August of 1861 and served in the Department of Tennessee. The regiment saw action at Shiloh, Corinth, Resaca, Rome, Dallas, Atlanta and Bentonville.

During their service the regiment lost 4 officers and 218 men killed, died of wounds and disease. Numerous others were wounded but recovered.

After the war Harbaugh became an ordained minister and served as a presiding elder in the United Brethren Church and later served in the Ohio State Senate from 1894-1898.

During the Spanish-American War Rev. Harbaugh served as chaplain of the 6th Ohio Infantry and went with that regiment to Cuba after peace was declared.

Harbaugh died on June 8, 1916 in Bowling Green, Ohio. He is buried there in Oak Grove Cemetery.  [ad]
