Oval image of Holmes. Bust view wearing uniform coat. Plain mount. Period pencil identification and note on front and back. No photographer's backmark.

Holmes was born in 1844. He enlisted in Company C, 6th Mississippi Infantry on March 1, 1863. He fought with the regiment until captured at Nashville in 1864. Holmes was confined at Louisville, KY and then sent to Camp Douglas. This image must have been recorded at that time when passing through Covington, KY. In April of 1865 he enlisted as a Galvanized Yankee into Company I, 5th U.S. Infantry and was sent to Fort Leavenworth in Kansas. In October he deserted from Fort Riley and ended his military career.

He died in 1910 and is buried in Tullos, Louisiana.  From the late William Turner collection.   [jet] [ph:L]
