Image is a chest-up view of Carter Brander in a light-colored civilian suit with a dark collar and light shirt and tie. Bottom center of the mount has a period ink ID that reads “SGT. CARTER BRANDER.”

Contrast and clarity are good. Mount and paper have light to moderate surface dirt with two faint creases on the bottom third of the image.

Reverse is blank.

Image is from the collection of the late William A. Turner.

Carter Brander was born November 26, 1844.

He began his service in July of 1863 when he enlisted as a private in Captain William S. Wood’s Company, Browne’s Battalion of Cavalry assigned to the local defenses of Richmond.

On September 1, 1863 he was assigned as Quartermaster Sergeant in Captain Thomas A. Brander’s Company of Letcher’s Virginia Light Artillery of Pegram’s Battalion. He was present with the battery through the surrender at Appomattox. While Brander was with the battery it was engaged at Spotsylvania, Weldon Railroad, Petersburg and Five Forks.

After the war Brander became a well-known insurance agent in Newport News, Virginia. He died there of a stroke on September 16, 1908 and is buried in Richmond’s Hollywood Cemetery. [AD]  [ph:L]
