Very nice full standing CDV of a Union medical officer posed leaning against a podium. An inscription on the reverse identifies him as J. W. Robie.

Robie holds his dark slouch hat with his right hand. The hat is adorned with a cord and a wreath with “US” at center sewn to the front of the crown. Robie also wears a dark frock coat buttoned down the front with 1st Lieutenant of staff shoulder straps with matching dark trousers, sash, waist belt with plate and a Model 1840 medical sword.

Image has excellent clarity and contrast. Mount has been slightly trimmed. Paper and mount are clean.

Reverse has a period ink inscription that reads “J. W. ROBIE 1863.” Also on the reverse is a modern stamping that reads “US HIST CW MEDICAL.” There is also a modern inscription in pencil that reads “MEDIC.”

John W. Robie was born in New Hampshire around 1836. The 1860 census shows him listed as a medical student. He appears on the 1866 New York State militia rosters as a Surgeon. The cursory research done did not turn up anything on his wartime service. Most likely he was a contract surgeon.    [ad][ph:L]
