George A. Magruder is listed as a cadet when he was appointed acting inspector general of the Post at Gloucester Point on July 19, 1861. He accepted his appointment August 30, 1861. He was assigned to the staff of General John B. Magruder and served with him at Yorktown and later when he commanded the Districts of Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. Young Magruder eventually rose to be major and chief of ordnance and artillery.

In October of 1863 George was sent to Europe carrying dispatches. It is not known how long he stayed in Europe but he did return before wars end as he signed a parole at New Orleans, Louisiana on June 14, 1865.    [AD] [PH:L]
