This is a somewhat worn CDV image of a young Federal soldier in uniform.
Wayne Harding enlisted on November 4, 1861 as a Private in the 52nd PA. Infantry. In this image he is seated and wearing a unique eight-button shell jacket with shoulder tabs, and his forage cap. He is posed in front of a painted backdrop featuring a camp scene.
Mount has worn edges and corners and is cracked/split at the bottom edge of the actual image. Old pencil identification on back, “W.H. Harding”. Also a note “Enlarged from [?] G.M. Kinney, Artist”.
Wayne Harding was 21 years old at enlistment and was from Wyoming County, Pennsylvania. He died of disease at Hilton Head, SC. On May 2, 1863 and is buried in Beaufort National Cemetery.
The 52nd regiment saw fighting during McClellan’s Peninsula Campaign before being send to the Carolinas. [ad] [ph:L]
