CDV is of Kinsman from the chest-up. Image appears to be from life but with the uniform drawn on. He wears a dark double-breasted frock coat with major-general’s shoulder straps.

Image is very nice. Contrast and clarity are excellent as is the paper and mount.

Reverse is blank but for a period ink ID of “509-J. BURNHAM KINGSMAN, LT. CO & ADD’L. A.D.C., BV’T MAJ. GEN U.S.V.” and at bottom “BVT. MAJ GENL, J.B. KINSMAN.”

Josiah Burnham Kinsman was born in Cornville, Maine on April 29, 1824. He attended Harvard and took up the study of the law and became a partner in Benjamin Butler’s law firm.

He was commissioned a lieutenant colonel on June 24, 1862 and assigned to the staff of General Butler. During his service he received three promotions by brevet, to colonel, brigadier general and major general all on March 13, 1865. He was mustered out on July 20, 1866.

After the war, Kinsman returned to Boston where he was a prominent member of the Suffolk County bar.

Kinsman died in Boston on July 14, 1912 and is buried in Collins Cemetery in Cornville, Maine.   [ad] [ph:L]
