Here we have a three-quarter full standing view of a grizzled old Lieutenant Colonel Richard H. White of the 3rd Wisconsin Cavalry. He stands in the Napoleonic pose staring into the camera with his body turned away. He wears a double-breasted frock coat with lieutenant colonel’s gold oak leaves and an officer’s sword belt and belt plate. He wears an officer’s sash and carries an M1850 Staff & Field Officer’s Sword on his left hip. The bottom of the mount is signed in period ink “Yours Truly / Richard H. White.”

The reverse shows a backmark which reads: “A.C. Nichols, / PHOTOGRAPHIST, / 62 Delaware St., / Leavenworth, / Kansas.” A period ID is written in ink and reads “Richd. H. White / Col 3rd Wis / Cavalry.”

This CDV is in good condition overall with some light surface dirt and one small spot on the obverse at the top of the photograph near the left corner.

Lt. Col. White was commissioned in the 3rd Wisconsin Cavalry at muster-in in 1862. The regiment was sent out west to Leavenworth, Kansas and was then sent to Arkansas & Missouri. The regiment mustered out in September of 1865 at Ft. Leavenworth. The subject of this photograph was dismissed on October 26th 1863. Records regarding White’s service were not readily available so his story is yet to be discovered.

What we do know is that he was born in 1810 in Pennsylvania according to census records. A Find A Grave listing shows his headstone which records his death date as July 5, 1887. He is buried in Salina, Kansas, where he lived post-war. [CLA][ph:L]
