This is a nice, untrimmed cdv image of Devins in uniform. He wears a double-breasted frock with shoulder straps. Sash, sword belt around waist with sword cradled in his arm. Sitting on a table next to him is his fully dressed Hardee hat, with hat cord, plume, and infantry horn insignia with “15” in the center.
Back of mount features simple back mark of photographer “BLACK” in Washington, DC.
Charles Devens was born April 4, 1820 in Charlestown, MA and later lived in Worcester, Massachusetts. He was a 41-year-old lawyer when he enlisted on 5/19/1861 in the field & staff of the 3rd Mass. Rifle Battalion. Two months later he was commissioned as Colonel of the 15th Mass. Infantry.
On 4/15/1862 he was commissioned Brig. General and then Maj. General by brevet on 4/3/1865. He was Mustered Out on 6/2/1866.
Member of GAR Post # 10 (George H. Ward) in Worcester, MA. He was National Commander-in-Chief from 1873 to 1874. He died January 7, 1891 in Boston. [jet] [ph:L]
