CDV is of Jacob Kent posed with one arm resting on a balustrade and the other holding his dark slouch hat by his side. He wears a dark sack coat buttoned to the throat and light-colored trousers.

Contrast and clarity are very good. Mount has some light edge staining. Paper is good. Bottom center of the mount has a period ink ID of “JACOB KENT.”

Reverse has a photographer’s imprint for RUSSELL… NEW YORK. Reverse also has a period ink ID that reads “JACOB KENT, 143 REGT. N.Y. VOLUNTEERS, CO. B.” Image came from an album of 143rd New York soldiers.

Jacob Kent was born in Sullivan County, New York. He enlisted as a private in Company B, 143rd New York Infantry on August 20, 1862. At the time he was described as being an 18 year old farmer with dark brown eyes, black hair and a fair complexion. He stood 5’ 7 ¼ inches tall. During his service he was sick several times, once in November of 1862 and again in April of 1863. Both times he was sent to Ascension Hospital in Washington, D.C. and both times returned to his Company. He was mustered out at Alexandria, Virginia on July 20, 1865.

While with the 143rd the regiment was engaged at Suffolk, Wauhatchie, Missionary Ridge, relief of Knoxville, served throughout the Atlanta Campaign, Averysboro and Bentonville.

Unfortunately, nothing is known of Kent’s post-war life.    [AD][PH:L]
