This is a small, uncased tintype of Greble in uniform. Image is wrapped in copper frame only, no glass, no case. Image is slightly dark but image remains clearly visible. Chest up view in uniform with shoulder straps. Contained in the back is a printed memorial label on blue paper. It reads, “LIEUT. JOHN T. GREBLE, Killed at Great Bethel. Abbott & Co., 143 Nassau St., N.Y.” Photo measures 1.4” x 1.7”.

John T. Greble was born in 1834 in Pennsylvania. He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1854. While serving as a Lieutenant commanding a battery of the 2nd United States Regular Artillery, he was shot and killed at the Battle of Big Bethel, Virginia (June 10, 1861), the first land battle of the Civil War. This made him the first Army Officer to die in the conflict. Lieutenant Greble received posthumous brevets up to Lieutenant Colonel. He is buried in Laurel Hill Cemetery West, Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania. [jet] [ph:L]
