Here we have a “from life” bust view image of Confederate cavalry commander Wade Hampton, who commanded a brigade of Cavalrymen in JEB Stuart’s division in the army of Northern Virginia. This CDV features a bust view of a burly Wade Hampton; his beard obscures his collar rank insignia. The bottom of the CDV is identified in period ink: “Wade Hampton.”
The condition of the image is good, although the contrast is somewhat light. The top of the CDV has also been trimmed (albeit cockeyed). Overall, there is dirt throughout with some minor staining to the mount.
The reverse of the image again shows a period ink ID which reads: “Wade Hampton.”
Another pencil ID, this one modern, is written in pencil is seen below the backmark and reads: Wade Hampton / 3 – 28 -1818 / 4 –11–1902. This image came from Bill Turner‘s collection, and the pencil ID on the bottom verifies that. It reads CDV–1342 / I – BT – 167.
This image was once a part of the Bill Turner collection, which was part of the Ray Richey collection of images. [CLA][PH:L]
