An unmounted oval albumen photo 5-1/4” by 7-1/4.” Excellent condition with nice tones and clarity. Slightly clipped at the top. Small glue stains on the upper reverse. Lewis William Washington (1812-1871) was the great-grandson of Augustine Washington, George Washington’s half-brother. He resided at an estate named Beall-Air about five miles from  Harper’s Ferry from 1840 to 1871 and was a Colonel in the Virginia Militia. As a prominent local figure, slave owner, and possessor of several Washington relics, including a sword and pistols, he attracted the notice of John Edwin Cook, an advance scout for John Brown, was taken hostage during the 1859 raid, and was present in the firehouse when it was stormed and captured by a party of U.S. Marines led by Lt. J.E.B. Stuart. Lewis Washington’s son James Barroll Washington also achieved an unintended measure of fame. Captured while carrying orders from Johnston to Longstreet during the Peninsula Campaign, he ended up posing while a prisoner with fellow West Pointer George Armstrong Custer for one of the more classic images of the war.   [sr][ph:L]
