Tintype photograph features Captain Edgar T. Wilson in uniform with sword. The quarter plate is approximately 3” x 4” within a typical velvet lined case. Captain Wilson wears a single-breasted nine-button frock with shoulder straps, sash, and sword belt. He has kepi on his head and rests his hands upon his foot officer’s sword. Brass details were gilted while the sash was tinted red and the shoulder straps have a touch of blue.
Image is clear with good contrast and Wilson stares directly into the camera. There is a ring of oxidation around the perimeter of the copper mat. The photograph case remains complete with no damage other than light wear on the exterior. Hinge and latches remain good.
The photograph was acquired along with Wlison’s embroidered shoulder straps and his infantry officer’s hat insignia. The hat insignia is a black velvet oval with bullion embroidered infantry horn. Made of bullion thread and sequins with small tassels hanging from the horn. A small brass “2” is mounted within the loop of the horn. This piece is backed with brown polished cotton. This remains in very fine condition. The pair of captain’s shoulder straps are also in similar good condition other than the blue field of one (likely stored on top of the other) has faded to a lighter shade. They are also constructed of nice bullion thread. As stated, one blue field is lighter than the other. The undersides of the straps are covered with tarred cotton.
Edgar T. Wilson lived near Lake George, NY, and was 28 years old when he enlisted on 4/21/1861, into the 2nd New Yor Infantry. He was immediately commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant on 7/27/1861 and Captain on 10/10/1862. He was Mustered Out on 5/26/1863 at Troy, NY. The 2nd NY was active is most eastern theater fighting up to and including Chancellorsville. The pieces were acquired together at estate sale. [jet][ph:L]
