John Fernald was a resident of Portsmouth when he enlisted on 9/30/1862 as a Private. He mustered into Company B of the 17th New Hampshire on 11/13/1862. He transferred out on 4/16/1863 and into Company K of the 2nd New Hampshire. He mustered out on 10/9/1863.
A sharp, bust-view of John in his dress frock is mounted in a gilt brass frame with patriotic embossments. The frame is housed in a Littlefield, Parsons, and Company Union Case with original label. The front case half houses a mounted period identification reading “John Fernald / the Son of / Sarah A. Fernald / Portsmouth NH”. The case is in good condition with a minor crack in the wall of the back half near the clasp. Hinges are secure, clasp and tab are complete. The case features a floral spray motif with limited gold accenting and virtually no damage. Dimensions of the case are 2.55” x 3”.
A very nice New Hampshire volunteer image for the discerning Civil War collector. [cm] [ph:L]
