The 6th Maine Infantry was organized in Portland, Maine and mustered in for a three-year enlistment on July 15, 1861. The regiment was attached to W. F. Smith's Brigade, Army of the Potomac to March 1862. Later to the IV Corps, Army of the Potomac, then to VI Corps. The 6th Maine Infantry mustered out of service August 15, 1864.

Offered here is a trimmed down albumen photograph showing 20 members of the regimental band, all with their instruments, and identified in ink on the back. This was originally a large oval image on typical pasteboard mount that was trimmed to fit into a frame; now the image measures approximately 6.25” x 4.25”. Due to known enlistment and discharge dates of these men, this image was likely recorded in the Fall of 1861.

The photo shows the 20 members, in uniform and with their instruments all posed upon some large rocks. Likely recorded somewhere along Rock Creek or the Potomac when the regiment was stationed at one of the forts surrounding Washington, DC. All are wearing 9-button frocks and a few fellows display insignia on their caps. Most are carrying their brass horns while one has cymbals, and two are with drums. The painted eagle is visible on the bass drum.

Written in fine ink on the back are the names of the men. Unfortunately, some information was lost when the photo was trimmed. Eighteen names remain with associated instruments and home towns:

Brackett, 2nd Tenor, Calais; William Henry Bowker, 2nd Cornet, Machias; Rufus L. Wilder, 4th Cornet, Machias; William h. Callender, 2nd Cornet, Boston; Orrin B. Davis, 3rd Bass, E. Corinth; Frank A. Exborn, 2nd Cornet, Portland; Daniel G. Meader, 4th Cornet, Ellsworth; John M. Peck, Snare drum, Ellsworth, George Weldon, Drum.

Trimmed photo has lightly soiled on face and one small faded spot, otherwise fine. Mount remains strong with no folds or cracks. Nice, readable ink inscriptions on reverse. A rare image of a Civil War regimental band.  [jet][ph:L]
