In this CDV Murphy is shown seated wearing a dark civilian suit, white shirt and dark bowtie.

Image has very good clarity and contrast. Paper and mount are also very good. Bottom of mount has photographer’s mark of PARVIANCE…PITTSBURGH.

Reverse has a nice strong period ink inscription “GEO. W. MURPHY / SEPT. 26, 1863.” Beneath is some collector information in pencil.

George Wallace Murphy was born in Pennsylvania. He was commissioned a captain in the Commissary Department on July 2, 1864. He was promoted major by brevet on March 3, 1865 and was mustered out on January 10, 1866.

Research shows that George W. Murphy of Pittsburgh was married to the sister of Mrs. Alexander Hays, later First Lady of the United States.  [ad][ph:L]
