Rear Admiral Andrew Hull Foote (September 12, 1806 – June 26, 1863) was a prominent Union naval officer during the American Civil War. He is most celebrated for commanding the Western Gunboat Flotilla, which worked in tandem with General Ulysses S. Grant to secure pivotal early victories along the Mississippi, Tennessee, and Cumberland rivers. Foote was also a fierce advocate for naval reform, anti-slavery efforts, and religious temperance. He passed away unexpectedly in 1863 from a form of kidney disease, leaving the Northern States in shock.
This carte-de-visite image features a standing view of Foote and is mounted to a plain card. Both image and card are in excellent condition with only miniscule corner wear. The reverse is clean, with a more uncommon style of E. ANTHONY back mark - giving credit to Brady’s National Portrait Gallery for their ownership of the negative and permission for use. A penciled label of Foote’s name is noted at the top edge.
An uncommon image of one of the Union’s most effective and respected commanders. [cm][PH:L]
