Major General John C. Frémont served as a Union commander during the American Civil War, famous as "The Pathfinder" and the first Republican presidential nominee. Appointed by President Abraham Lincoln in May 1861, he led the Department of the West but was relieved of command after issuing an unauthorized emancipation order in Missouri. Prior to the war, he was a US Senator and professional explorer responsible for opening portions of the American West.
His image is mounted to a common style of card with a gold double-line border pattern. A penciled “Fremont” is noted just below the image, with the top of the “F” extending onto the photograph. The reverse is clean, with a canceled 2-cent stamp and an E. & H.T. ANTHONY back mark. Overall condition is very nice.
An uncommon and important piece for the fine Civil War image collector. [cm][PH:L]
