Extraordinary Zulu War decade collection of uniforms & documents belonging to Captain/ Major Mutter Royal Artillery. The grouping includes his minty full-dress blue-black heavily gold bullion embroidered tunic with monogramed "M" major's epaulettes and his dress pants with gold bullion strips. Excellent condition boots with, affixed to the heel, brass spurs. Minty condition regulation maker marked officer's full-dress Pattern 1878 service helmet having 100% original (gold) fire gilt! It bears a regulation Victorian artillery plate with the addition of "SCOTTISH DIVISION" in a riband below. The interior and exterior are perfect. Additionally, his minty officer's pattern forage or pillbox cap is with the group.

There is also a bandolier holding a dispatch pouch with the Victorian royal cipher in gold bullion and an accompanying patent leather case for foul weather. It shows the finest gold "stump work" embroidery and has the royal arms of Queen Victoria surmounting a fire gilt Royal Artillery badge. Some insect loss to the blue-black wool backing and edges.  Also, one finds a gorgeous gold stump work embroidered sabretache with the Victorian royal cipher and the metal gilt Royal Artillery device; this has its accompanying leather foul weather storage bag. There is insect loss to the blue-black wool backing and edges, but this does not affect the beauty or overall appearance. This all is suspended from a gold bullion sword belt which has its original officer's fire gilt ornate snake buckle.

One finds also gold embroidered personalized captain's epaulettes with the silver letter "M" affixed (Mutter). Included is a minty Pattern 1822/29/45 Artillery officer's sword having a gold sword knot. This polished steel sword has a 32" blade with etched panels of scroll & patriotic and Royal Artillery themed emblems. A right-side banner is acid etched "ARGYLL ARTILLERY VOLUNTEERS 1872" and "ARTILLERY MILITIA, 1876" with an additional etched panel having a castle over banner with the motto "PATIENCE AND RESOLUTION". A smaller banner is etched "J.M. MUTTER".  The ricasso is etched "HOBSON & SONS LONDON & WOOLWICH". Iron hilt with copper wire wrapped sharkskin grips. It retains its gold sword knot. The polished steel scabbard is in place. Also included is Mutter's sheet metal Jappaned footlocker which measures 41" long, 12 1/2" wide and 8 1/2" high. The lid has a riveted brass plate engraved "J.M. Mutter Esquire / Argyll and Bute, Arty Mila".

2 amazing binders containing over 100 pages of period documents, envelopes, photos & newspaper clippings concerning the life and military career of Mutter including pages of his handwritten notes on gunnery! If all this regalia were to be ordered today for an officer, the cost would exceed 15,000 dollars. All the above was in a museum until recently and should be back in one or a world class collection!  [pe] [ph:L]
