The career of Brigadier General William Ames is an interesting one.

At 19, he enlisted in June of 1861 and commissioned as a 1st Lt. of Co. D, 2nd Rhode Island Infantry.  Less than a year later, in February of 1863, he was discharged and commissioned into the field and staff of the of the 3rd Rhode Island Heavy Artillery.

His service took him from Washington DC, to Fort Pulaski near Savannah, and the famed Morris Island in South Carolina.  After serving as a major with the 3rd Rhode Island on Morris, he was detached to command a coastal artillery brigade as Chief of Artillery within the Department of the South – not long after being promoted to Colonel.

By March of 1865, he was breveted a Brigadier General and mustered out of volunteer service in August of 1865 at Charleston, South Carolina.

Undoubtedly, the General crossed paths with many United States Colored Troops stationed on Hilton Head Island, coordinated with some of the most famous ships of the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron, and participated in the efforts to retake possession of Charleston – including bombardments and assault support.

These gauntlets (heavy gloves) are in a wonderful condition with no signs of damage.  The leather is soft and supple with no cracking, while the upper portions of the glove are slightly miscolored from the General’s use during the war.  Near the opening of each, they are marked “Captain William Ames” – dating the inscription from between 7/24/63 and 1/28/63 according to his official service records.

If you are a collector of identified Civil War items, Heavy Artillery, or an enthusiast of the Southern Theater of the war along the Lowcountry of Georgia and South Carolina – these are essential for your collection and would display beautifully. [cm][ph:L]
