This yacht ensign is rather unusual in having twelve stars rather than thirteen, but when waving in a breeze it would be hard to keep count and there certainly would be no doubt about the nature of the flag. This is made of worsted wool, measures about 25 x 36 inches, and has handsewn white stars and anchor. The colors are strong and the flag is solid, though showing wear and holes. It has been framed, but not professionally conserved.

The anchor carries an old, brown ink inscription reading, “A present from Adm. Farragut” reportedly in the hand of Francis Bannerman, the famous military antiques and arms dealer, who did, in fact, like Farragut, or at least appreciated the publicity he could gain by owning and exhibiting Farragut relics, like two Dahlgren guns and other relics from the USS Hartford. Farragut died in 1870, a bit early for him to have made a direct present to Bannerman, but it may well have come from an intermediary. Bannerman (1851-1918) liked to advertise his operation as a combination salesroom and museum, so anything of historical interest, especially with martial aspect to it, was bound to catch his eye.   [sr] [ph:L]
