Offered is a very rare, enlisted man's Zouave fez/cap worn by a member of Co. A. 87th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. Only Co. Now that the reader is an expert on the Zouaves of the 87th Pennsylvania we can get to the offering.
THE FEZ: The dark blue cap portion is made of a heavy felt. It is 7 inches high and 10 inches across. It was made without inner lining but shows evidence of once having a beading of cotton or silk around the bottom circumference which was probably red. The cap's blue matches the blue color jackets worn by these infantrymen. Attached to the top of the cap is a cord of red wool 5 inches long. Attached to this is a substantial wool tassel 11 inches in length and when bound up tightly is 6 inches in circumference. It appears to be madder dyed with a topcoat of cochineal. The condition of all the elements is excellent. With the fez is its storage cylinder. Made of tin it measures 8 1/2 inches in length and is ovoid in shape with a male and female component. This in itself is a very rare piece of field equipment and the condition is perfect. This Zouave cap/fez is a great early war rarity that just surfaced. [PE] [ph:L]
