The 3rd Vermont Infantry regiment was a three-years infantry regiment in the Union Army during the Civil War It served in the eastern theater, predominantly in the 6th Corps, Army of the Potomac, from July 1861 to July 1865. It was a member of the Vermont Brigade. Please view this link (3rd Vermont Infantry Regiment in the American Civil War). The cap we are offering was worn by Horace E. Davis who was a draftee of August of 1863 and before he was mustered out in 1865, was wounded at The Wilderness and 5 months later at Cedar Creek, Virginia.
This is a Model 1858 "Forage Cap" or "Army Cap", a product of the Murphy and Griswold company of New York City who had several wartime contracts from 1862 to 1864. The 1 1/4-inch square maker's label is well worn but firmly in place. It reads, " M. & G." above this is "U.S. ARMY" and above this "SIZE---". The cap is made of dark blue Kersey; the front rises to 5 inches and the rear is 7 inches. The exterior condition of the cap is excellent with a very few tiny insect holes. There is an adjustable patent leather chinstrap with a stamped brass decorative buckle that is held in place by 2 enlisted man's eagle buttons. The patent leather unbound visor is 1/16th inch thick, it is 2 inches deep and 6 1/2 inches across. The interior leather sweat band is 100% intact with scuffing to the surface. The brown, originally black, glazed cotton lining is 95% missing; remnants remain. The original hemp stiffening band is intact. On the crown of the crown's disc is the red felt Latin cross of the 1st division 6th corps. This measures 2 inches across the arms. There is a brass metallic decorative roping within the arms of the cross. Surmounting this cross, dead center, is a stamped brass "3" for the 3rd Vermont Infantry.
This fine, classic "bummer's Cap" was identified by Mr. Ray Richey as being worn by Horace E. Davis 3rd Vermont Co. C from 1863 to 1865. The cap was on display at The Texas Civil War Museum in Fort Worth. [pe] [ph:L]
