This "sleeper" was recently found among dozens of fine military items in a Boston home. It was worn by Henry D. Norton who enlisted in the 45th Massachusetts Volunteer Militia in September of 1862 and served until discharge in the field due to infirmity in June of 1863 after his involvement with the regiment's campaigns at Kingston and New Bern, North Carolina. The high crowned cap was a French made contract typically worn by the early formed Massachusetts' regiments including the elite 44th Massachusetts. Made of dark blue broadcloth it rises 6 inches in the rear and almost 4 inches in the front. The disc on top is 6 inches in diameter. There are a very few minor insect holes, and all hand sewn seams are strong. 2 eagle "I" buttons hold a once functioning chin strap that sports a decorative stamped brass buckle. The polished black cotton interior is quilted and cotton filed; worn in spots it is never-the-less 80% intact. In the top there is an embossed makers logo. The 1 1/4-inch leather sweat band is 99% there with some minor cracking where it joins the Patent leather bound peak or bill which is 1 3/4 inches deep and has green leather on the underside. On the under left side of the chinstrap in neat 1/4-inch ink letters is written " HENRY D. NORTON" followed by "A. 45th". This was discovered by chance when this compiler was doing a minor restoration to stabilize this strap.
This cap is in really fine condition, and it was actually the field service cap of a soldier from a distinguished Massachusetts' regiment. [pe] [ph:L]
