Nice dark grained wooden chest meas. approx. 9.50 inches wide x 11.08 inches long x 9.50 inches high. The box is constructed using rabbet type joints that have been glued. It has a brass hinged lid that lifts to reveal segmented compartment capable of holding 20 to 25 bottles of various sizes. Below this compartment is a pull-out drawer segmented horizontally into four compartments.
The lid is made with glued rabbet joints but with brads holding the front corners. The top piece of the lid is secured by eight small brass screws. Top center of the lid has an oval brass escutcheon with a folding down handle.
The top interior compartment holds ten medium sized glass medicine bottles, all are in good condition and all have stoppers. There are also eight smaller bottles, again, all are in good condition and have the stoppers. There is also one large glass bleeding cup. The lid closes down on a lock with a small brass key escutcheon. There is a key present but the teeth are broken.
The lower drawer holds a porcelain invalid spoon, a small bleeder cup, the key mentioned above, a glass syringe, a test tube, two glass probes and another unknown glass medical instrument. Drawer also has a lock escutcheon.
Looking over the body of the box it is in solid condition overall. There are a few closed cracks, one runs for about 3.25 inches along one side and corresponds to the top height of the drawer. The other two are also closed cracks that run along the back, one runs horizontally across the back panel about 1.00 inch below the brass hinges, while the other runs three-quarters of the way across the back of the lid, also about 1.00 inch above the hinges. None of these cracks show any signs of getting worse and they are not affected when the lid and drawer are opened.
This is a nice solid set that would work well with any medical display. [ad] [ph:L]
