This is a pasteboard container with an essential medicine, quinine.  In America during the Civil War, quinine was like a miracle drug to physicians. Malaria, yellow fever, and other tropical diseases had several symptoms in common, including fevers, chills, and nausea. Quinine was a sure way to ease its symptoms.

Philadelphia-based Zeitler and Rosengarten had the foresight to hire French chemist, John Michael Maisch, who first isolated the alkaloid from cinchona bark and within three years of the discovery was selling quinine. They obtained cinchona in bulk at low cost and processed it to obtain the quinine, which was then extracted into sulfate.

Offered here is a pasteboard container of quinine pills. Containers are 1.5” in diameter by 0.63” tall. Label pasted on top reads, “WM. SMITH & CO., DRUGGISTS / NO. 7  E. MARKET STREET, YORK, PA. / 2 Gr. / Quinine / PILLS.” Container still holds 13 pills. William Smith & Company existed in York from the 1820s until just after the turn of the century. We are unable to specifically date this container, but they would display well with collections of many eras.  [jet][ph:L]
