This leather-covered wood medicine box/chest closely fits examples from the pre-Civil War period in construction, design, and contents.
The exterior leather shows wear consistent with age, including material loss in some areas. The brass lock and matching decorative studs on the joint straps and handle are complete, though the lock does not have its companion key and does not catch in the closed position.
The interior is covered with green, marbled paper and features 2 remaining heavy paper stock trays. The left tray holds 8 bottles – 1 damaged and 3 with original labels written in oxidized period ink. The right tray holds 9 bottles, 5 of which retain their original labels. Each bottle, save for 1, retains its original, fitted cork (though several are loose). The bottles measure 1.25” x 1.75” at the bases, and 3.25” in height/length. Exterior dimensions are 9.25” x 12.1” while the interior measures 8.1” x 11”.
This is an ideal set for display or to round out any collection of earlier medical artifacts. [cm] [ph:L]
