This bridle leather sword knot in as near new condition as you can get. The finish and color are superb. The maker’s stamp is crisp, reading “E.GAYLORD / CHICOPEE / MASS. Emerson Gaylord was one of the major suppliers of leather gear to the U.S. government during the war. The “turk’s head” braid is in place at the end of the knot. All the small leather tassels are present.
These wrist straps were intended to prevent the mounted trooper from losing his saber entirely if he had to let it go or lost his grip. One end of the strap is sewn to the inside of the knot and tassels. The other can be withdrawn, placed around the knucklebow of the saber’s guard, and then slid back into the knot, slightly protruding, to allow one of the inner row of tassels to be put through a small hole in its pointed end. The strap pulled back slightly to lock it in place. Two sliding loops act as tighteners for the strap.
This is a basic piece of cavalry gear. If you want to illustrate one looking “as issued,” this is a great example. [sr] [ph:m]
