Mid-19th Century scale that could be used for weighing large amounts of meat or cereal type rations. It is more like a scale that a post or regimental quartermaster might use.

The actual scale mechanism is housed in a heavy iron body approx. 6.50 inches long x 2.50 inches wide with a heavy iron “O” ring at top for attaching to a tree limb or beam and an iron hook at bottom for weighing beef or a sack of oats, wheat, corn, etc…

The face of the weight mechanism has a brass plate graduated into 5-pound increments from 0 to 300 pounds.

The piece still retains much of its original black paint however over the years of storage it has built up some surface dirt and light surface rust. There are no visible markings.  [ad] [ph:m]
