The steel swivel hook measures approximately 8.5” long overall and 3” wide at the top. This consists of three pieces: snap-hook, middle link, and belt link with roller. The snap-hook device is marked “O.B. NORTH & CO. NEW HAVEN – CT” on the inside. The spring is strong and operates well. All parts are clean and bright.
These hooks were a part of the Cavalry shoulder sling designed for use with weapons fitted with sling rings (musketoon, rifled carbine, and all of the patented breech-loading carbines). The sling was to be worn over the left shoulder with its buckle to the back. These slings were used extensively throughout the Civil War and well into the post-war period of the Indian wars as well.
