$150.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 380-29

Haversack is the Model 1878 made of khaki canvas material with a strong “U.S.” stamped on the outer flap. Sewn to the underside of the flap is a 8.25 inch long canvas latch tab with two brass gromet lined holes which fasten to a brass buckle located on the bottom of the body of the haversack.

The interior of the haversack has a small pocket at front for holding the meat can. This pocket is held closed by a flat metal button which is present. The main section of the interior is divided into two large pockets. The sides of which have smaller compartments for holding a knife in a leather sheath and the fork and spoon.

The canvas material has moderate surface dirt and staining but no rips, tears or holes.

With the haversack is the rarely seen black leather sling. The sling is approx. 2.00 inches wide at top center and tapers down to 1.00 inch on the ends. Each end of the sling has a brass hook for adjusting length. The sling attaches to the haversack by brass hooks passing through “D” rings attached to the back of the haversack. The leather of the sling is dry but not stiff. There is some surface finish loss but it is still pliable.

Neither the strap or haversack are maker marked.

The 1874 meat can is the third type with a solid handle and a “D” ring attached to the lid. The body of the can is oval in shape and meas. approx. 8.25 inches long x 6.50 inches wide x 1.50 inches deep. The folding handle which holds the lid in place is stamped “U.S.” and “RIA” for Rock Island Arsenal. The name “HITT” appears faintly on the lid. The kit is in good used condition with numerous scratches and one small ding along one side. With the kit is the proper knife and fork with a 1902 spoon.  [ad] [ph:L]
