Here is a complete Civil War set; M1863 artillery bit with “US” bosses, bridle with “USA” rosettes, and reins. The bridle and reins are constructed of heavy leather.

Iron bit is the 1863 Artillery model. Side “cheek” pieces have brass “US” medallions riveted in place. Mouth piece (port), cheeks, and rings are in place. The bottom cross bar is missing. “US” is stamped on the port and one of the cheek pieces.

The bridle remains attached to the bit on one side. The other leather cheekpiece is missing. The headpiece is 1.5” wide. The sliding brow band is just over 0.75” wide with stitched edge. A large brass intwined “USA” rosette is mounted on each side where the Brow band connects. Approximately half of the throat latch is missing on the same side as the missing cheek piece.

The leather reins are buckled together to make them one piece. The reins remain attached to one side of the bit; the leather “loop” on the other side has split and come off the bit; easily fixed.

Overall condition of leather is worn but strong. Leather appears to have been treated and some point. All stitching remains tight and strong. Brass buckles exhibit mellow patina. The set will display fine as is, or it needs just a couple of small leather pieces to completely repair.
