Standard Civil War period snare drum meas. approx. 14.50 inches tall and is approx. 16.75 inches across. Both hoops are present and have 95% of the original paint. There are some dings and dents in the rims of the hoops from use and age. Each hoop is painted a dark blue and are decorated with 10 five-point stars done in gold paint. The maple wood body of the drum is plain and in very good condition with a smaller than usual view hole on one side outlined with a diamond shaped bone escutcheon. Both heads are present. The top head is torn across its face and curled with some of it missing. The bottom head is more complete but also has three tears and is very dirty. Five broken snares are present at bottom. Snare hardware is also present. Tension rope is old but whether it is the original or not is difficult to tell. Four leather ears remain. [ad] [ph:L]
