Lantern is known as an “arm lantern” due to the large “O” ring attached at top which allows the user to put his arm through the ring to hold the lantern and still have both hands free to work.
The body is made of brass with an oil reservoir and wick with adjustment wheel at bottom. The glass globe sits in a cage made of five vertical arms of brass wire and one horizontal ring for support. There should be six arms but one is missing. The cage also has one arm that has come loose at the top but is still holding in place. The top of the lantern has a brass lid with air holes to vent the globe, a finial that has a good-sized dent which has caused the base of the “O” ring to become twisted and loose.
The glass globe is in good condition with a visible interior crack about 2.00 inches long near the top. Glass is marked with raised lettering that reads “U.S.” over “ORD DEPT.”
From the collection of the late Mike McAfee. [ad] [ph:L]
