Civil War bridle or headstall rosette: stamped brass, circular, with wide rim and domed top bearing a raised, entwined “USA.” The reverse is fitted with a brass staple to mount it on the leather straps of the headstall of the horse. These are considered to be for US artillery, not being mentioned in Civil War regulations for U.S. cavalry who, before the war were in theory provided with rosettes bearing regimental numerals and company letters, but are not specified any in wartime ordnance manuals.
This is a good example with bar and stiffening fill in place on the back and nice, medium tone to the brass face. The entwined USA likely dates this to 1863 when the entwined USA rosettes on the artillery bit were introduced. [sr][PH:L]
