Measuring 1-1/2” inches in diameter, this is stamped brass Civil War bridle or headstall rosette with a raised, five-pointed star on its domed center. This has a raised rim around the base and was secured by a long brass wire loop soldered on the reverse. This was made without the stiffening lead-solder fill sometime found on the reverse of bridle rosette, but served the same ornamental purpose, mounted on the headstall of the horse. As military, but non-regulation pattern, it was likely a part of a mounted officer’s “horse furniture,” though in a well-funded militia company, whose purpose was often mainly to outshine other similar companies, all bets are off as to whose horse gear this might have adorned, northern or, perhaps even more likely, southern. The condition is good, with medium, aged brass tone showing some thin brown age stains and a few shallow dings to the edge. The long wire loop is in place on the reverse, showing some bends indicating it was actually used. [sr][ph:m]
