Civil War bridle or headstall rosette. This is stamped brass, circular, domed with two steps and given a raised, entwined “USA” on the top, measuring 1-3/4” in diameter. The reverse is fitted with a brass staple to mount it on the leather straps of the headstall of the horse. These are considered to be for US artillery, not being mentioned in Civil War regulations for U.S. cavalry who, before the war were in theory provided with rosettes bearing regimental numerals and company letters, but which are not specified any in wartime ordnance manuals.

This is a good example with no dents or dings and the bar in place on the reverse. The brass has an aged, untouched, unpolished tone with some thin brown age stains and one tiny spot of verdigris at lower left. The entwined USA likely dates this to 1863 when the entwined USA rosettes on the artillery bit were introduced. [sr][ph:m]
