Issued to horsemen during the war, this 18” long, leather strap is in very good complete condition. The 1” wide, brown bridle leather device is looped upon itself making it the 18” long, strong leather wrist loop. Strap is held together and tightened by two leather adjuster loops and features a plaited full set of thin cut tassels at one end. All tassels remain. The bridle leather has a smooth light brown appearance and remains flexible. There is some light spotting on the leather. No maker’s stamp visible.

As part of the cavalry trooper’s equipment during battle, the knot was secured to the sword hilt and then looped around the cavalryman’s wrist. Its purpose was to enable the combatant to retain possession of his edged weapon should he receive a blow that knocked the blade from his grip. These original leather sword knots are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain today.

Would make a special addition to any leather collection or Federal cavalry display. [jet] [ph:L]
