Issued to horsemen during the war, this 18” long, leather strap is in good, complete condition. The 1” wide, brown bridle leather device is looped upon itself to make the strong leather wrist loop. Strap is held together and tightened by one leather adjuster loop and features a plaited set of thin cut tassels at one end. One tassel is broken. The bridle leather has a light brown appearance and remains flexible, with some crazing to the outer layer. No maker’s stamp is visible.

As part of the cavalry trooper’s equipment during battle, the knot was secured to the sword hilt and then looped around the cavalryman’s wrist. Its purpose was to enable the combatant to retain possession of his edged weapon should he receive a blow that knocked the blade from his grip. These original leather sword knots are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain today.

Would make a special addition to any leather collection or Federal cavalry display.  [cm][ph:L]
