A well-marked example of the U.S. Model 1853 curb bit as issued for mounted artillery service, of iron construction with a brass-faced cheek on the near branch. The brass boss is die-struck with "USA" in raised Old English-style script within a shield, and the shank above is stamped in two lines, "FRAZEE / NEWARK, N.J.," identifying the maker as J.M. Frazee & Co., a period contractor supplying accoutrements and horse equipments to the U.S. government. Below the "USA" boss, the strap bears an engraved government sub-inspector's cartouche, "A.G.B.," in cursive script. The off branch is plain iron, S-curved to match, with both branches additionally stamped "US" — the inspector's marks appearing on each side bar as well as on the ported mouthpiece bar, indicating the piece passed full government sub-inspection at multiple points of assembly. Fixed rein rings are present at both branch terminals, and the bit retains its jointed, ported mouthpiece typical of the pattern.

CONDITION: Iron surfaces with a dark, oxidized patina consistent with age and service; brass facing with expected tarnish and light surface wear but with all stampings crisp and legible. Mechanically sound and complete, joints functional.  [ss] [ph:L]
