Dating this tarred linen soft knapsack is difficult; the date range would be 1850 to 1880. So, it would have been a style used in the Crimean War 1854-56, The Indian Mutiny 1857-59, The New Zealand War 1861, The Fenian Raids 1866 and other colonial conflicts including The Zulu War 1877-79.

The front flap is 14 inches by 16 inches while the single compartment bag it covers is 16 inches by 12 inches in depth. The front flap is bound in leather and has 2 closure straps and 2 harness leather tabs on top to hold a bed roll. There is a plethora of stampings on its inside which include: 2 opposing British Broad Arrows (sold after market commercially); a Broad Arrow over "WD" for War Department; "890"; "78"; "W T S 90"; a stamping that may read " 3 RH"; "000" over "114" and more including an obscured large faded red stamping that is probably the maker or contractor. The flap is 80% detached from the bag but easily repaired. The canvas lined bag has harness leather and buff leather straps on the back. There is a remnant of a large buckle and strap assembly on the right bottom and 2 blind leather straps on the bottom right and left. The bag has a number of small tears on the bottom and sides. All existing buckles are of the early "roller type". This is a very rare piece of British military equipment because this compiler in 63 years in the hobby and trade in both Canada and the US has never seen one before.   [jet][ph:L]
