The two-piece CS plate was widely used on sword belts. The quality of the casting and finish work depended on the time, resources and talent of the different makers. This one shows nice detailing to the leaves, berries and crossed ribbon tie of the wreath, good smoothing off of the belt loop, and even some gilt finish. Attention was also given to the reverse of the plate, with file marks evident around the periphery and the back of the belt loop and slotted tongue support smoothed off as well. Only the gutter of the wreath shows the rough, sand-cast surface.
This is a very nicely detailed and quality plate, certainly from an officer’s belt. [SR][PH:L]
