New York followed federal patterns in its plates of the 1850s and 1860s, using the large oval plate with oval studs on the reverse from about 1858 to 1862 and bringing in the arrow-back style in 1863. This is a very nice example of the latter, about 56 by 87mm, issued by the state as part of accoutrement sets that included a matching cartridge box plate. These were intended for the state’s militia (National Guard State of New York after 1862,) but O’Donnell and Campbell note a few arrow-back SNY belt plates have been found on 1864-65 sites (see O&C Plates 547-550 especially.)
This has a very nice, medium brass patina showing a few brown and orange age spots, but nice detailing. The studs and hook are firmly in place on the reverse, which has a smooth bluish gray surface with a few scratches and a couple of tiny dings at the edge that are not visible from the front.
This would be a nice example to help fill out a New York belt and accoutrement plate collection. [sr] [ph:m]
