Plate has a close similarity to the plate 1004 pictured on page 598 of Donnell & Campbell’s American Belt Plates book.
The slanted angle of the anchor with two stars beneath is indicative of the earlier made Pattern 1852 plates. Later versions show only one star under the anchor or delete them altogether.
This plate has a nice even dark patina and bears a bench mark stamp of “53” on the reverse of both pieces.
Plate has fine detail and is an attractive piece. [AD] [ph:L]
