Stamped brass, oval plate has a spread-winged eagle with a patriotic shield on its chest at center. Face is nice and clean with good detail to the eagle.
Reverse is not lead filled as is proper with both brass attachment loops present.
This plate is similar to one shown as plate #56 on page 352 of “American Military Belt Plates” by O’Donnell and Campbell and as figure 214 on page 220 of Syd Kerksis book “PLATES AND BUCKLES OF THE AMERICAN MILITARY 1795-1874”. The latter book identifies this as a waist belt plate and assigns it a rarity rating of 7. [AD][ph:L]
