These sturdy, cast brass rectangular belt plate with side loop and integral tongue were introduced in 1872 along with the Palmer brace system. That system required additional brass loops placed on the belt for its shoulder straps, with the plate altered in the 1874 version to incorporate one of those loops. That brace system was short-lived, and the M1874, but the M1872 continued on and even after it was replaced for field use it was still worn in for garrison and dress duty until 1902 making it a key Indian War and Spanish-American War plate for the collector. See O’Donnell and Campbell for details and examples.
This is a very good example with nice mellow color, side loop and tongue in place, distinct lettering, raised edge, raised oval around the “U.S.” and nice stippled ground. There are a few minor, thin age stains, perfectly commensurate with its age. [sr][ph:L]
