This belt plate was manufactured by Emerson Gaylord shortly before the Civil War when some of Baltimore’s uniformed militia companies made a purchase of sword belts carrying these plates.

Emerson Gaylord of Chicopee, Massachusetts, produced high quality belt plates by first casting and then die stamping to bring out the detail in the oval seal. This firm made similar waist belt plates bearing the state seals of Virginia, Mississippi and Georgia.

This non-excavated example is in very good condition. It has a very slight flattening of its original curvature. The belt loop and hook are fine, with bench mark “207” stamped on back. Very nice, dark patina, with the fine background details still remaining that this state seal is known for.  [jet][ph:L]
