A very attractive example of a scarce plate. O’Donnell and Campbell illustrate this pattern as #472 in their American Military Belt Plates, and Mullinax (1991) notes at least two different die strikes in their production, calling this one, with a thicker base to the Palmetto Tree and bigger 1776 date, his Type-1, showing several variations of it in Plates 355 to 361 where the wire loops have been replaced with a pin back for use on web belt, with doubled wire hooks, loops or brass stud studs and belt hook for wear on a waistbelt. O&C date the pattern broadly 1850-1861.

This is in overall excellent condition. The rim shows no significant dings or dents and has sharp outer and inner borders with some traces of gilt finish showing and only a few expected age stains and little wear next to one of the loops where the leather belt would rub. The convex face shows just a few tiny pencil-point marks to the left of  the tree branches and expected rubbing to the gilt on the highpoints of the tree leaves and raised edges and letters of the shields, but still with crisp detailing, and with significant gilt in recessed areas around the leaves of the tree, the shields, the base of the tree, in the centers of the shields and in the recessed bands around the edges of the shields containing the raised letters. The lead-solder filled back has a nice silver gray, level surface with no chips or losses and both iron loops fully intact, one showing just a little oxidation to its surface.

This is very strong example of a rare southern plate with Confederate use well established by excavated examples and war trophies.  [sr][ph:L]
